So having pulled apart a joypad for the first time, am I right in saying the "Keyboard" membrane thing can't be lifted off the plastic casing to clean under the letters? It looks to me like the only way to remove it will destroy it - or is there a trick?

Hi,

if you are careful, you can remove the whole membrane from the plastic-casing (it is glued in).
most of the time the membrane is broken (at least the conducting parts)
the worst broken traces happen, where the membrane is bent 90 degrees (i marked the areas in the picture)
I managed to fix it (temporarily) with silverpaint...

Has anyone reached out to the companies that do Amiga and Spectrum membranes? Maybe we could get new replacement membranes made.

Not sure if there's enough demand for them for it to be viable, but may be worth asking.

I was thinking this exactly. This would make the controllers like new again. I will have a look into this also
