Here's photo of joypad membrane, 8 discrete directions, can you get 16 directions from this? Maybe a combination of 2? Although doesn't seem worth the effort as the up,down,left,right pads take up half the real estate.

BTW pin assignments for diagonals are:-
Left control
Up/left - pin 7
Left/ down - pin 9
Down/right - pin 3
Right/up - pin 9

Right control
Up/left - pin 5
Left/down - pin 7
Down/right - pin 3
Right/up - pin 7

Since 2 directions use the same pin some of these would need to be combined with the adjacent direction to work.

Ok, then another CV myth is debunked! But I swear the Diagnosticart has a joystick tester program that will display 16 different directions, and not activate three at a time as soon as you move diagonally?
