Who has real hardware to test my homebrew games?

Post by Fabrizio Caruso » Fri Jul 17, 2020 8:54 pm

Hi everyone!

I have written a second game for the Creativision.
I need someone to test it and also test the first game.
Both games are universal 8-bit games written with CrossLib (https://github.com/Fabrizio-Caruso/CROSS-CHASE/).
They are mass-compiled into 200 versions for nearly all 8-bit computer/consoles.

A binary 16k image (in Mame compliant format: second 8k followed by the first 8k) of the Cross Chase (first game) is available at:
https://github.com/Fabrizio-Caruso/CROS ... WAPPED.bin

For Cross Shoot (the second game), I am not sure how the image should be structure.
The second game may need 24k or at least 18k. How am I supposed to re-order the 4k or 8k blocks?
I cannot get it to load into Mame.

Who could help me test my games?
The games have no sound. In Mame/Mess it seems that a buzzing sound is present. Could someone please verify this issue on the real hardware?

Hi Fabrizo,
Unfortunately, while I have a Creativision, I have no way of making carts currently.
For MAME support, have a look at the MAME Discord. They're a welcoming bunch and very helpful!

Hi,

here you can watch the first version of crosschase on real CV hardware...

Sorry for the badly flickering (and out of focus...) video...

I inserted a few seconds of an original game at the beginning for audiolevel reference...

Thanks Scouter3d for your test!

Is the flickering caused by my game code?
In Mame/Mess I hear an annoying sound. (The game has no sound, yet).

I cannot really see which version of the game you are testing.
Cross Chase latest version has some graphics and colors.
I have just updated it at:
https://github.com/Fabrizio-Caruso/CROS ... WAPPED.bin

I would like to create a cartridge version for Cross Shoot but I have no idea which sizes are possible.
Is 32k possible (on a multi-cart or eprom)? How should I structure it? Should I swap the 16k blocks?

Hi Fabrizio,

No, the flickering is caused by filming the screen with my handycam... i will use another videocamera the next time...

As you can hear in the video there is no annoying sound

I used the version you posted at the beginning of this thread (17.7.) the game is in black and white

I will try the new version (23.7.) soon...

32k is possible (and the maximum) if i remember correctly on my 32Kb "Everycards" no swapping is needed
but i have no clue, to which address the Creativision jumps when starting a cartridge... i guess $8000 ???? (can someone enlighten me?)

Thanks! It looks good!
Is it too hard? too fast?

You can also shoot at the enemies and missile bases if we catch the gun item.
The game has 10 items.
Some of the items are secret and can be unlocked by some actions you can do with the gun (kill/hit the skull, destroy (multiple) missile bases).
The game has a total of 20 levels with different challenges.

Hi,

Yes, the game is rather fast and the enemies seem very fast too, i wanted to shoot, but did not manage to get the gun and live long enough :0)
