Next project

Post by carlsson » Fri Mar 22, 2013 5:42 pm

I'm pondering which kind of game should I take on next. As you can see from the poll options, I have a few that I already "know how to do", or at least think I do.
  • Tetris would mostly be based on my 1K VIC-20 game Zapactris from 2002.
  • Bejeweled would be based on my VIC-20 game Jewels Deluxe from 2007.
  • Q*Bert would be trivially based on my 1K VIC-20 game VIQ*Bert from 2002.
  • Text adventure has been discussed in the other thread, might be a co-op project.
  • Cowthilde is a comp.sys.sinclair Crap Game that I made the other year. It mostly is for laugh, but might be extended to something retro. I've got load more of crap games, but most of them are moot points and not really worth putting efforts into converting to proper games.
  • Other is open for discussion. I've got some more game ideas that I never finished implementing, or perhaps someone wants to co-operate around a different type of game that so far hasn't been seen on Creativision? Don't expect too complex designs though, I have my limitations...

I vote for Q*Bert. My friend Adrian Scheel would have an orgasm with it! :-)

Just to clarify: I intend to implement at least the first three, just need to decide in which order. Actually a Q*Bert clone might be a good idea to do next, as it would involve multiple sprites, collissions, perhaps even 5th sprite flicker to study. I've begun with reading some Colecovision programming threads on AtariAge to get some idea what to expect.

Perhaps we aren't more than four active visitors on this forum? ;)

Anyway, I haven't done any more development in the past few days, perhaps I'll have some time in the Easter weekend.

Update: Heh, thanks for the board-wide message for everyone interested in the Creativision to come to the forum and enjoy. :D

Hi carlsson,

Great job on Othello!

My vote goes to either Tetris or Q*Bert :)

Thanks for the kind words. Hopefully within soon we'll be many people working on different projects, small or big.

I'm somewhat tied between Tetris and Q*Bert.

As for Tetris, I think every system deserves a Tetris variant, I don't think it would be terribly difficult to do, and you've already got some great music in place for it.

On the other hand, Q*Bert is one of my favorite games. I just hope the Creativision version will look somewhat better than the VIC-20 one, maybe even approaching Parker Brothers' Colecovision and TI-99 versions or even the C-64 one (which is the best one graphically IMHO). As for the flickering, Parker solved this such that the main bodies of all characters have lower sprite numbers than the features like eyes etc. So if there are more than 2 objects on the same line, some of their features disappear, but the main body shape always remains visible because it's very rare that more than 4 creatures would appear on the same line at a time.

So in the end, I voted for Q*Bert.
